From Development to Recycling.
BMW is committed to minimizing the environmental impact of its vehicles throughout their entire life cycle. This holistic approach contributes to the BMW Group being recognized among the world’s leading companies in sustainability in the Dow Jones Sustainability Group Index.
The principles of “Design for Recycling” are already applied during the development phase to create the conditions for environmentally responsible recycling. Through the targeted use of recyclable materials, reduced material diversity, and easy material separation, vehicles can be efficiently recycled at the end of their service life and valuable raw materials returned to the production cycle.
The take-back and recycling of end-of-life vehicles is carried out through authorized take-back facilities in accordance with European legal requirements.
Environmental Assessment and Recycling.
The treatment of end-of-life vehicles is supported by authorized ELV facilities. Every kilogram of automotive waste follows the most economically and environmentally efficient recovery route. Valuable raw materials are returned to the production cycle, minimizing their environmental impact.
The environmentally responsible treatment of end-of-life vehicles takes place in four stages: controlled collection, pre-treatment, dismantling, and recovery of the remaining vehicle.
Recycling of Electric and Hybrid Batteries.
High-voltage batteries from BMW electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are collected, transported, and recycled in accordance with applicable European and Austrian environmental regulations. Take-back and treatment are carried out by qualified partners and authorized specialist companies to ensure the resource-efficient recovery of the contained materials.

Design for Recycling.
Environmental Compatibility of BMW Vehicles.
As part of the “Design for Recycling” approach, engineers assess all components with regard to their recyclability and integrate these findings directly into vehicle design. Preference is given to recyclable and recycled materials, for example in high-quality plastic components or insulation materials with a high recycled content.
BMW also ensures that all partners involved in the recycling process are optimally supported through training programs and detailed documentation. This guarantees an efficient and standardized recycling process across all stages.
These measures ensure that for every BMW vehicle:
- pyrotechnic components can be neutralized quickly and safely.
- all operating fluids can be completely removed.
- materials can be clearly identified and sorted by type thanks to markings in accordance with international ISO standards.
- and the use of recycled materials is consistently promoted.
Take-Back Conditions.
All authorized end-of-life vehicle centers are obligated to accept BMW vehicles free of charge, regardless of their date of first registration.
However, free take-back is only possible if:
- The end-of-life vehicle originates from or has been registered for use within the European Union.
- The end-of-life vehicle is complete (equipped with all components essential for its operation, including powertrain, chassis and body, catalytic converter, and electronic control units) and is free of waste and unauthorized equipment.
